With hundreds of different foundations to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start. More often than not, when it comes to makeup we go for the famous name without realising it may not suit our skin type. Regularly I hear people say that a brilliant foundation is absolutely rubbish – but the truth is, it just isn’t an appropriate formula for their skin type. Today, though, we’re going to focus on foundations that best suit combination skin, which essentially means a more oily t-zone with drier skin on the perimeters of the face. These formulas must offer hydration and oil-control at the same time, and so they can be tricky to perfect. So, without waffling on any more, here are what I think are some of the best luxury foundations for combination skin.
LUMINOUS SILK FOUNDATION by Armani Beauty
I feel as though I can say, hand on heart, that the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is one of the best complexion products ever made. Despite the makeup industry evolving spectacularly in regards to ingredients and formulas, the Luminous Silk Foundation has remained as one of the best for years. And it will continue to do so too. With a creamy and hydrating formula, it offers a soft radiance to the skin that lasts all day. Unlike other radiant foundations, the Luminous Silk formula has incredible oil-control. Whilst your T-zone will get a *little* bit shiny throughout the day, I find it to be quite minimal, especially when used with a setting powder. (See my favourite setting powder here).
Whilst my current skin type is combination, I’ve experienced times where my skin has been very dry or quite oily. What’s been clear is that the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation has worked brilliantly no matter how my skin has behaved over the past 10 years. So, with that said, I think it’s a fail-safe foundation for combination skin as it works fantastically on more dry skin and more oily skin too.
AMBIENT SOFT GLOW FOUNDATION by Hourglass Cosmetics
The Ambient Soft Glow Foundation is a beautiful luminous formula packed with coverage. One pump will do, but as it is a thicker consistency (thanks to the amount of pigment) I always apply it on top of plenty of moisturiser and with a damp beauty sponge. This gives the most even and blended look, and allows the formulas radiance to perform as well as it can.
If you have a particularly oily T-zone, this may be a tad too luminous for you. Although, I have combination skin, and whilst I do blot my skin after a few hours, I’ve never known any caking, separation or excessive creasing.
After the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, the Hourglass Ambient Soft Glow Foundation is a daily go-to of mine. It’s an incredible formula for events or for those moments where you’re experiencing some hyper-pigmentation, redness or spots. As most full-coverage foundations are incredibly matte, the luminous and hydrating Ambient Soft Glow Foundation is an amazing product to have in your makeup collection if you want lots of coverage and a product that will look great in both your oilier and drier areas.
BACKSTAGE FACE & BODY FOUNDATION by Dior Beauty
A modern classic: I remember when the Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation launched and the makeup world went crazy. Alongside the packaging, the marketing was brilliant and enticing. The idea of the ‘model off duty’ with natural looking skin that feels effortless to achieve. A buildable formula that can offer either a hint of coverage, or more if desired. A skin moment everybody wants to achieve, with really cute and innovate paint-bottle packaging. Genius marketing. But anyway, let’s talk about the formula.
The formula has a natural, almost soft-matte finish that has fantastic oil control. Again, like with all foundations, I find application is best with plenty of moisturiser underneath and when using a damp beauty sponge. This combination allows foundations to look radiant, smooth and ultimately feel their best of your skin too. The Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation is great for those easy days, for those good skin days, and for when you want coverage but for it to be truly undetectable. I find that concealers apply really nicely over this formula too, meaning you can easily add some extra coverage if desired.
PRESTIGE LE MICRO-FLUIDE TEINT DE ROSE FOUNDATION by Dior Beauty
Now, I know this is an extortionately expensive foundation, but it deserves a mention nonetheless. With an eye-watering £120 price tag, I know I probably will never be able to justify re-purchasing this foundation once I’ve got to the bottom of my bottle. However, what I will always say, it is a beautiful, beautiful foundation.
Packed with pigment, this is a luxurious creamy and hydrating formula that glides across the skin and blends like a dream. The formula looks smooth, and radiant, and the oil-control is next to none. It never looks cakey or heavy, and whilst it is a full coverage foundation (amazing for events) your skin always looks fresh and amazing. Packed with skincare ingredients, my skin always looks an extra bit calm and soothed after wearing this formula all day.
The Dior Prestige Foundation is designed for Asian skin, and therefore the shade range reflects that as such. The range is light, meaning not everybody can find a shade that suits them. Whilst this could be seen as a negative, I’m glad that Dior are taking the step to be inclusive of different skin tones – it’s necessary for all brands to do so, so I can only praise the brand for doing this. However, it would also be great if the shade range was bigger, as this is truly a fantastic foundation. In saying that, if you’d love to try the Dior Prestige Foundation but are concerned that the shades my not suit you, don’t be put off. The shades suit an array of different skin tones, and come in a variety of undertones.
